I was riding bmx at lake cunningham skatepark in san jose ca. I was not paying attention to where I was riding. I turned to look forward and i found i was going over the edge of an 8 foot pool. I landed head first and was knocked out for a few minutes. I suffered a broken wrist, arm, elbow, and foot, as well as a sprained ankle, knee, and some permanent scar tissue in my knee. I was told at the hospital that if I was not wearing my helmet I would be dead. Thanks for the protection pro-tec!!!

Orange, CA (May 21, 2011) – Chris Miller, who saw a streak of five wins snapped a year ago, claimed his sixth Pro-tec Pool Party Master’s title before a capacity crowd Saturday night at the Vans Skatepark in Orange, CA. Miller pocketed $18,000 while defending champ Steve Caballero took home second and Lance Mountain third. The Masters’ field became even more interesting in the past few days as first time entrant Tony Hawk entered the fray. Hawk, who was skating in his first contest in a decade, was fourth in his first Pro-tec Pool Party.

The Masters comp was followed by an exciting Pro Division final that saw 16-year old Brazilian phenom Pedro Barros score his first Pro-tec Pool Party win and $30,000 while edging out veteran Pros Rune Glifberg who took home second and Andy Macdonald who placed third. Two-time defending champion Bucky Lasek had to sit this one out due to a recently fractured ankle. The Pro division is seeing an influx of new talented skaters as in addition to Barros, the top ten also included 18-year old Nolan Munro in fourth, 20-year old Alex Perelson in fifth, 14-year old Steve Pineiro in 7th place and 16-year old Sky Siljeg in 9th place.

Stephen Murray Helps Fellow Rider “Stay Strong”

On November 17, 2010, the BMX News forum carried a thread started by the Nesvig Family with news about San Diego BMX Racing legend, Danny Meadows. Danny has been battling Multiple Sclerosis the past few years, and it has moved him from the two wheels of his cruiser to the four wheels of a wheelchair.
Danny has dirt in his DNA, and has served the BMX Racing community faithfully and selflessly for years. He built the “Meadowsland” in his backyard, and there was rarely a day when BMXers, MTBers and all kinds of other action sports aficionados weren’t there riding, hanging out and having their bikes wrenched by one of the West coast’s best.
When the ABA and US Olympic Committee came together to put a permanent BMX track on OTC/Chula Vista property, it was Danny Meadows and his family who helped make it happen, and served as the first Track Operators for what we now enjoy as one of the top local and national tracks in the nation, if not the world.
Back to the BMX News thread. The one thing that would get Danny back on the track was a four-wheel four-cross downhill bike (see link below). Easy enough, right? Well, yeah, with the will to do it on Danny’s part…and $10,000. Danny had the stoke, that’s for sure. So, his friends set about raising the funds to get him the bike.
The Nesvigs, joined by Tyler Brown and his mom, and a posse of other friendly do-gooders worked the crowd at last year’s ABA Grands, “passing the bucket” and staging a silent auction chock-full of awesome prizes. Between then and now, they managed to raise about $4,000 to put toward Danny’s ride. But the $10,000 goal was still a big ol mountain in the distance. Until…
At the Grands, Tyler got to talking with Marco Dellisola, the current UCI Masters World Champ, and driving force behind the “Stay Strong Stephen Murray” movement in the BMX Racing community. Tyler told him the full story, and Marco said he wanted to try and help, if he could. Marco is a “heart of gold” type as well, inventing innovative ways to help his best friend, Stephen Murray, as he struggles with a spinal cord injury suffered at a 2007 Dew Tour stop in Baltimore. That accident left Stephen paralyzed from the neck down, and confined to a motorized wheelchair.
After the Grands, Marco was back in So. Cal before heading back over to his native England, and told Stephen about Danny’s dream to ride again. Friends say that Stephen was inspired by Danny’s story, and wanted to be a part of making his dream a reality.
So, through his “Stay Strong Stephen Murray Foundation,” which is supported By Oakley, Murray and Dellisola got a donation together, which was presented to Danny by Stephen, himself. Marco and Tyler were by their sides, last weekend in Chula Vista.
To hear Danny tell it after the big moment, “They told me I needed to come down TODAY (Saturday) to see the race…I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I got over here…and they sprung it on me…I couldn’t believe it, I was blown away.”
The donation was a $5,000 check to all-but-close the gap between what Danny’s friends had raised and the goal. Standing there watching this unfold was a lesson in humility and humanity at once.
Danny was obviously overwhelmed by the generosity, and was nearly moved to tears when the presentation check was brought out. And there was Stephen, a man whom a cynic might assume would be the last person to write a check like that, when his own expenses often top $10,000 per month.
You’d have to have ice water running through your veins to not have an apple in your throat at the sight of that exchange. But, we’re all “tough” BMXers, so we did our best to smile and choke it back.
With all the selfishness and greed going around in the real world today, Stephen’s generosity to a fellow rider is an example which, we feel, should be headline news on every network on the air. And if it cannot be, then we owe it to all we can reach to report it as widely as possible.
Murray’s donation put the goal in reach, with about $800 more needed to write the check for the bike. Spurred on by ace announcer Mike Redman, everyone within earshot reached deep into their pockets. Singles, fives, twenties, fifties and a C-note or two were waving in the air, held by people who couldn’t wait to help. Before long, Redbone’s assistants had more cash in their fingers than a hot dog vendor at nearby PETCO Park.
By the time Danny made his way to the SX track for the Elite racing, the goal was accomplished…he will have his new scoot in a matter of weeks.
Danny says he only has one more favor to ask of his friends.
“I want them to push me up to the top of that (SX) hill. I definitely want to give that a try. And if i pull it off, I’m going to try that first set!”
We have no doubt he’ll make it…he’s cleared larger obstacles in life in the past year! And when he does it, you can be sure BMX News will report back to you with the footage and the photos.

Ryan Hudson, 22, spent most of his life in homeless shelters and on the street. At the age of 15 he found the Toussaint Academy in Downtown San Diego, a homeless shelter for at risk teens. It was here that he was introduced to Chris Rutgers and the Outdoor Outreach Program. Outdoor Outreach has taken more than 5,000 youth on over 1,500 outings including snowboard trips to Big Bear. Ryan's first trip to the snow was transformational to say the least. After experiencing what Ryan calls "the greater things in life" he became a snowboarding prodigy, immersing himself in the sport and competing professionally. Ryan currently lives in Utah where he works and rides every day. Five years ago he was given the opportunity to participate in the Leadership Program for Outdoor Outreach and has dedicated his down time to providing similar opportunities to the homeless and troubled youth of San Diego. His goal is to create more opportunities for kids stuck in the same place he was.

Transworld snowboarding on Vans & Pro Tec | High Standard Double Big Air at Winter Park, CO

The Hi Standard Double Big Air brings snowboarding “back to the basics”. Basics meaning the double big air jump contest limits riders to spinning 720’s or less. Anything over a 720 and the run is disqualified. Big Air done the Vans way is strictly based on style and creativity.
Over the weekend Vans and Pro Tec hosted the “High Standard Double Big Air”. Competitors threw down in less than ideal weather conditions over 2 big jumps at the Rail Yard in Winter Park, Co. Riders sessioned the jumps in a jam format where judges Andreas Wiig, Nick Poohachoff, and Yale Cousino scored them strictly on overall style.
In this new age of double and triple corks it’s refreshing to see a contest that’s not about how many time’s you can huck yourself around. At the High Standard Double Big Air, Style is everything.

June 22, 2007 marked a day that the Action Sports world will remember for a lifetime. A day that has forever changed the life of professional BMX rider & three time U.S. Gold Medalist, Stephen Murray. In the midst of doing a double back flip, Stephen Murray crashed while competing in the BMX Dirt Finals at the Dew Actions Sports Tour, in Baltimore, Maryland. It was quoted as being “one of the worst crashes seen in BMX” and one that would ultimately be career ending for this incredibly talented, 27 year old athlete.Fully paralyzed, Stephen now lives a different reality, but see’s it as a platform to help others. Through his "Stay Strong" foundation and missioner determination, Stephen surprisingly finds a powerful way to pass the bucket.

This past weekend Winter Park Resort hosted the Hi-Standard Double Big Air presented by Vans and Pro-tec. The competition was definitely refreshing to see, as contestants couldn’t throw more than a 720, and it was all about style. Over 30 riders participated in the event, and everyone was going big and having a great time!

In this day and age with competitors pushing huge double and triple corks in the park and pipe we start to lose appreciation for how we got to were we are. Don't get me wrong, it's fun watching a triple cork go down that completely disregards all scientific fact about gravity and human capability, but sometimes we have to turn back the clocks and remember that one thing reigns supreme: style.
With this very truth in mind, Curtis Sorensen and the Vans team put together the Hi-Standard Double Big Air at Winter Park, a competition based strictly on style. The only rule: no spins over a 720.
The Winter Park terrain crew put together two massive jumps each roughly 50-65 feet takeoff to landing making for some huge steezed out tricks. The greatest part was that any trick had a chance to win. Weather it be back to back methods, back ones or two 720s; if it didn't have any style you weren't normally on the others side of things, Andreas Wiig, Yale Cousino and Nick Poohachoff had the honor of being the first judges of this one-of-a-kind competition. It must have been extremely difficult to judge as all the riders had such insane style in all their tricks. From a double shifty 720 to huge boned out methods and back ones for days; it had to be one of the best competitions I have ever witnessed.
Taking home the Van's golden boot and Pro-Tec golden helmet and best trick was Chris Willet with his 720 double shifty over the second jump. James Haffner took home the silver boot for second followed by Davis Johnson in third.
A huge thanks to Curtis Sorensen, the Vans team, Winter Park and the judges for putting on such a unique contest. It's great to see style a priority over how fast you can huck over a jump.

Head First Gary Young on Brain Trauma

In 2007, Odyssey/Sunday/Vans pro Gary Young, a Bronze Medal winner in BMX Park at X Games 16, fell while riding street and fractured his skull in three places. Blood poured from one of Gary's ears and he spent three days in intensive care. When he fully recovered, Gary made the decision to always wear a helmet while riding. In the time since, Gary's riding has continued to progress on dirt, street and park, and he's done it all while wearing a helmet, helping to disprove the notion that helmets don't look cool in BMX. Now fully recovered, and cranking out progressive video parts in a helmet, Gary details his bouts with head trauma, the decision to ultimately wear a helmet full-time and the inherent risks involved with riding with or without a helmet.

ESPN.com: What happened to you that prompted you to wear a helmet full-time?

Young: I didn't learn after the first time. I hit my head riding a concrete skatepark, and I got on the cover of Ride BMX Magazine, and I don't even remember doing the trick at all. I have no recollection of it. I was super excited, but at the same time, not able to remember doing the trick. After that, I was like, alright, I wear helmets when I'm riding skateparks. That seems like a good idea. And then I hit my head while riding dirt. And I thought, alright, I'll wear my helmet while riding dirt now. But for the most part, I was riding street, and I wasn't wearing my helmet a lot. Then I hit my head riding street. It wasn't even a pretty hard hit. I tucked and rolled and took most of the impact to my shoulder. I wasn't even knocked out, it was just a good hit in a bad way. After that, blood started coming out of my ear. I went to the hospital, and was told I had contusions on my brain, and that my brain was swelling. I got put into the ICU, and had to spend a few days in the hospital. It scared my family and friends a lot, and I kinda realized that I was being selfish by not wearing a helmet. So I just decided from there on out to wear a helmet. I was married at that point too, I thought it wasn't fair to my loved ones to put them through grief from not wearing a helmet. It's ridiculously easy to do and I don't even notice it once I'm wearing it.

Has there been any lasting effects of your head trauma?

I've been pretty lucky. I had ringing in my left ear for a while, but that went away. Beyond that, not really. I've been pretty fortunate. Sometimes, I have a hard time finding the right word more so than before I hit my head. But I can read fine, do math like I could. Everything seems to be still there.

What are your thoughts about helmet use in BMX? Should more pros take responsibility and wear them or is it up the individual?

It's up to the individual for sure, but at the same time, we influence kids. We wouldn't be directly responsible for telling kids not to wear helmets but at the same time, we kinda are. It's freestyle though, you should do it how you want to do it. But at the same time, everyone has to make the right choice for themselves, and for me, that was wearing a helmet.

Why do you think BMX overall is experiencing more head injuries now?

Is it, or is it more in the public eye now?

That's a good point. It just seems like BMXers have been taking more and more hits each month. Maybe I'm more aware because I'm covering it?

I don't know. Vert riders are notorious for getting knocked out, and they were pushing tricks before foam pits were even around. They were getting knocked out every week. It comes with the territory to a certain degree. I know that since I started wearing my helmet, there have been times when I would've been knocked out if I wasn't wearing my helmet. Beyond that though, bikes are dangerous.

Has anyone heckled you for wearing a helmet full-time?

Not really. When you get hurt, you get off the hook. I kinda have friends stick up for me because I did get hurt. But say I just wanted to wear a helmet because that was the smart thing to do, I don't know what the reaction would be. I imagine there would be people who would say stuff about the decision, but in the end, who cares? They're gonna their thing, and you're gonna do your thing. It's just riding bikes. As long as you're having fun, you're doing it right.
